Problem-based Teaching in the Transition Era

Lupe

Food, energy and transport sectors, just to mention a few, must rethink their current strategies and face their own specific set of challenges: sustainability, economic feasibility, and negative externalities. The transition towards a new model (and new technologies) is definitely on the political and economic agendas.

However, this implies an increased need for broadly educated, skilled engineers, able to frame those issues within social shifts, innovation and different business models. In the past two decades, new approaches have carried a fresh stance in STEM teaching: this workshop will discuss how problem-based teaching can shape a new generation of engineers, who can cope with complex tasks, well beyond technological competences.

In the framework of the strategic partnership between TUB and University of Technology Sydney, the workshop aims to share and discuss the current experiences.

The event will take place on Friday, the 29th of September 2017, from 10:00 to 12:00, at TU Berlin, Marchstraße 23, 10587 Berlin - Room MAR1.065b

Convener: Dr. Massimo Moraglio, TUB

New publication:"Citizens' Participation in Urban Planning and Development in Iran"

Lupe

Prof. Dienel has published a co-authored the digest "Citizens' Participation in Urban Planning and Development in Iran".

The book, published by Routlegde, aims to shed light on the paradoxical question of participation in Iran: it is old and new, dysfunctioning and functioning, disappointing and promising. This slippery status of participation convinces scholars to suggest contradictory interpretations and understandings about the existence, functionality, and potentiality of this concept.

The book therefore shows the different perspectives, interpretations, historical developments and case studies of participation in Iran, thus giving the reader a kaleidoscope view on the question of participation in Iran.

Recommendations for an innovative access to public transport in Berlin

Lupe

The final results and recommendations of the project VERS (Traffic Access Systems), run by the chair Work Studies,Technology, and Participation have been successfully published.

The project's partners, TU Berlin, nexus Institut and Wissenschaft im Dialog investigated the attitudes towards digital traffic access systems and / or ticketing systems of the passengers of the Berlin public transport system.

The consortium has formulated eleven policy recommendations for a more user-oriented design of digital technologies in public transport.

Information on the project and the recommendations can be downloaded here: www.zukunftsticket.berlin

Four New Projects on Digital Participation and Mobility in Smart Cities

Lupe

The Institute for Vocational Education, Work Studies, and Participation will again be taking on the umbrella topic “Digitalization” in 2017:
Four new projects, funded by EITdigital (EU), will tackle the subject areas of “Digital Participation and Co-creation” and “Digitalization of Mobility Services in Smart Cities.”

The two projects, "Piazza - The Digital Living Lab Platform for the Co-creation of Smart Cities" and "Civic Budget", will develop solutions for citizen inclusion in processes of design and innovative financing for the cities of tomorrow. Two further professional schools entitled “Digitalisierung der Mobilität - Szenarien für die Industrie bis 2050” and “Smarte Bürgerbeteiligung für Entscheidungsträger” will be developed for interested actors in civil service and related fields.

All four projects will enter the pilot phase over the course of this year. The goal will be to develop products which will be of service to communities, public sector enterprises, and industries.

New Research Report: Acceptance of Digital Technologies in Local Public Transportation

Lupe

The research project VERS, funded by the BMBF, has released a new research report. The report collates responses to a survey of 1,200 users of the Berliner public transportation system. In the survey, researchers asked riders about their technology preferences, user concerns, and intentions concerning automated access systems in public transportation. More specifically, the riders were asked about a "Check-In/Be-Out" System, in which riders would check-in to the public transport system using a smart phone or chip card (check-in) and would automatically be checked out upon exiting the system (be-out).

The report is intended for both an academic audience (innovation technology acceptance research) and praxis-oriented actors in transportation economy, transportation politics, and transportation services. The goal of the report is to provide and instructive picture of the wishes of users, their habits, and their hesitations as they relate to new technologies in order to provide a guide for implementing new technologies in transportation.

Symposium

This year's Mobility2Grid Forschungscampus Symposium took place on 05.10.2016 at the EUREF-Campus in Berlin. The focus of this years symposium was the new MBA program "Sustainable Mobility Management," which will launch in the Winter Semester of 2017. During the event, sixty members of the academic and economic communities came together to discuss the future and design of the program.

After a welcome address given by Prof. Dietmar Göhlich, director of Mobility2Grid e.V., Prof. Hans-Liudger Dienel, the director of the Forshungcampus' Topic Area 5 "Education and Knowledge Transfer", presented the symposium's program schedule, which was designed to be both informative and participatory. Prof. Matthais Gather of the Fachhochschule Erfurt and Prof. Wolfgang Schulz of Zeppelin Universität Friedrichshafen then provided an overview of the MBA's concept and development process, which had focused especially on the culling together of suggestions from other fields of study. Kristina Kebeck of the GIZ then gave a talk on the potential of this new program. Afterwards, participants worked together in small groups, in which they developed further ideas for the program.

The event also gave participants the chance to become familiar with other master's programs that are currently on offer at the EUREF-Campus. Prof. Joachim Müller-Kirchenbauer introduced the "Energy Management" and "European and International Law" MBAs. Karoline Karohs presented the MBA in  "Building Sustainability - Management Methods for Energy Efficiency," which was launched this year.

The Mobility2Grid Forschungscampus Symposium was organized by Topic Area 5 "Education and Knowledge Transfer."
